Artificial Intelligence research has been on the rise since the early 1960s. Mentioning this brings out a picture of autonomous human-like machines that are fascinating. This is a facade implemented by science fiction.
It can conclusively be defined as the development of machines, software, or computer systems (especially) that are capable of mimicking human Intelligence. The devices should be able to learn the reason, generate conclusive reasoning, and self-correct mistakes.
Classification of Artificial Intelligence
Artificial Intelligence portrayed by movies as autonomous robots is a long-term goal yet to be achieved. Scientists and software engineers are striving to develop expert systems that can exhibit all-around cognitive features as human beings.
Artificial Intelligence is classified into two categories:
Weak
Strong
Weak Artificial Intelligence exists in the form of self-driving cars and personal assistants. The relatable examples include Google Assistant, Apple's Siri, Microsoft's Cortana, Amazon's Alexa, and IBM's Watson Assistant.
Strong Artificial Intelligence, or Advance General Artificial Intelligence, still exists as scientists' long-term goal. It is envisioned to have the ability to speak, learn and relate to the environment as normal human beings. It should have a well-structured and advanced neurological strong structure and the ability to exhibit emotions. advanced
Artificial Intelligence is also envisioned to be a perfectionist. It can now beat humans at specific tasks they are programmed for.
It's been witnessed that Artificial Intelligence can beat people at chess, solving equations and analyzing concepts. Advanced General Artificial Intelligence is expected to solve and outperform humans in almost all cognitive tasks.
Types of Artificial Intelligence
Reactive Machines
This category of Artificial Intelligence doesn't have any memory and cannot reference future versions. However, they can analyze and predict a strategic move to be taken.
An example is IBM's chess program (called Deep Blue) that beat Garry Kasparov- a professional chess player, in 1990. Another example is Google's AlphaGO.
Limited Memory
This type of Artificial Intelligence can influence future decisions concerning past occurrences. Self-driving cars implement this function in some of their decision-making processes.
The cars record observations that are then kept to influence future decisions. However, the words are not recorded permanently.
Mind Theory Machines
This type of Artificial Intelligence involves machines or software that can understand existing beliefs, desires, and intentions, which they can successfully implement in their decision-making process. The category has yet to exist.
Self Aware Machines
This category of Artificial Intelligence can understand current situations and refer to the information they gather to relate to the feelings of others. This type of Artificial Intelligence still needs to be created.
Technology implemented in Artificial Intelligence
Automation
This program is a system to perform tasks automatically without supervision. An example is Robotic process automation (RPA). This performs high-volume, repeatable duties typically performed by human beings.
Machine Vision
This gives computers vision or makes them able to see. The process involves capturing visual information using cameras. It also implements the processing of data signals and analogue-to-digital conversion.
Processing of Natural Language
The process involves the analysis of human language by the use of software on a computer. This technology helps translate text, speech recognition, and sentiment analysis.
Robotics
This field involves the development of robots. Robots are used in several settings, for instance, in vehicle assembly and the manufacturing line. The result of robots that can relate to a natural setting is also underway.
Self-Driving Cars
This is a combination of image recognition, computer vision, and deep learning to develop vehicles that can help self-pilot as usual as human drivers.
Application of Artificial Intelligence
It has been implemented in several fields as follows:
Healthcare
Some Healthcare facilities have implemented the use of Artificial Intelligence to make faster and more efficient diagnostics than humans. An example is IBM Watson. It has an understanding of the natural language and can respond to questions it is asked.
The system collects data on the patient from various sources, analyzes it and formulates a hypothesis that it presents.
Other Artificial Intelligence uses include; chatbots- a program that answers online questions from customers, helps them book follow-ups or help them through the billing procedure, and (virtual health) assistant to provide primary medical help.
Business
Robotic process automation (RPA) is applied to repetitive human tasks. Machine learning algorithms (MLA) are continuously being integrated into analytics to uncover how to serve customers better. Chatbots are incorporated into sites to help customers immediately.
Education
Artificial Intelligence has automated the grading process, saving learning institutions time. It can be used to assess students and help them meet their needs. This helps them study well at reasonable paces.
Artificial Intelligence built tutors help students study further and longer in an interactive manner, thus, helping them stay on track. It could revolutionize the whole teaching system, cutting costs while promoting efficiency and quality.
Finance
Artificial Intelligence has dramatically impacted financial fields such as the stock market. It also helps collect and analyze consumer data companies use to personalize ads.
This increases the efficiency of marketing as ads are specifically tailored according to the consumers' history of purchase.
Law
Discovery, analysis, and prediction of crimes or pieces of evidence of crimes in law are often difficult tasks for people. Artificial Intelligence has advanced analysis and conclusion-drawing skills that simplify this process.
It is also implemented in military operations to map out areas or control missiles.
Manufacturing
The manufacturing frontier implements the use of robots to automate the production process. This simplifies the whole process and increases the production level compared to using human labour in the process.
Key Points worth Noting on Artificial Intelligence
Artificial Intelligence refers to the simulation of human Intelligence in machines
Its goals include; learning, reasoning, and perception
It is being used across different industries, including finance and healthcare
Weak AI tends to be simple and single-task oriented, while strong AI carries on tasks that are more complex and human-like
What is the Difference between Artificial Intelligence and Human Intelligence?
It's arguable that AI is almost comparable to Human Intelligence. Listed below is a comparison between human brains and Artificial intelligence (brains).
Human brains are analogue, while computers have digital components for brains.
The brain uses content-addressable memory.
The brain is a massively parallel machine, while computers are modular and serial.
Processing speed is not fixed in the brain; there is no system clock
Short-term human memory is not like RAM
No hardware or software distinction can be made concerning the brain or mind of humans.
Synapses are far more complex than electrical logic gates
Unlike in computers, processing and memory are performed by the same components in the brain.
The brain is a self-organizing system.
Myths in Artificial Intelligence
AI will replace jobs. Scientists have proven that AI will make jobs easier, not replace them. This is a myth that speculators have long held.
Super intelligent computers will take over the world. This has been promoted by a series of science fiction movies that relay false futuristic messages. AI may portray superior intellect, but they are sure not to take over the world. They work on fed data.
The Bottom Line
Artificial intelligence advancements have made work more accessible in various fields. The field is still malleable, and several tech companies are constantly researching and trying to find ways of refining concepts levelled by Artificial Intelligence
